We're currently on a year long survey of the unexplored regions of the Beta Quadrant. According to apocryphal sources, there were two actual 24th century Federation starships operated by Starfleet, named Orion. The Federation Starship Orion, a Constellation class vessel, was commissioned on Reference Stardate 2/6610 (October 2266). They're most known for their use as explorers and many of them are found out on the edges of known space exploring the unknown. USS Orion (AS18) was a Fulton-class submarine tender of the United States Navy. They're fast, versatile and very robust, able to withstand many rigors. Members of this class are known for being not too big and not too small and are very popular ships to serve on. Her class is similar to the Constitution in detail but has a smaller design with simpler lines and a shorter neck.Īlthough she's actually a medium sized ship to me she's huge! (I can only imagine how those of my former crew who are following Captain Kirk to the Endeavor are going to cope with THAT humongous beauty!) She also has many amenities that the Saratoga lacked bigger labs, bigger rec rooms and bigger quarters. As the yard period had disrupted her six submarines-a-year docking schedule, she drydocked 10 submarines in the first four months of 1970 to restore the submarine drydocking schedule to normal. As a Constellation class she's almost three times as large as the Saratoga with three times as many crew. USS LOS ALAMOS spent all of 1969 in overhaul at Scott-Lithgow shipyard in near-by Port Glasgow, returning to the Squadron in January 1970. The ship itself is also a big change from what I'm used to. Whenever I hear the words 'Chief', I think of Joyce Filars. I have to keep reminding myself that even though I still feel like a Lieutenant, I'm now a Lieutenant Commander and Chief Engineer of the USS Orion. (Image credit: NASA/Kenneth Allen) Orion will be traveling at 25,000 mph (40,000 km/h) when it enters Earths atmosphere on Sunday. This is a commission done for me by jetfreak-7 USS Orion (AS-18) moored in berth S10 at Submarine Base Pearl Harbor,, with submarines USS Burrfish (SS-312) and USS Piper (SS-409) alongside.
